Cowlick: How to Style This Hair Issue

cowsills hair

When styling your cowlick, pat it down to keep it from sticking straight up and use a strong hold hair pomade like the L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Overworked Hair Putty. When you’re putting the finishing touches on your hairstyle, top it off with a strong hold hairspray, like the aforementioned Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hair Spray - Unscented, so that your look stays put. Back in the 1960’s, four brothers who wanted to be The Beatles formed a band called The Cowsills. The original Cowsills consisted of Bill on guitar, Bob on guitar and organ, Barry on bass and John on drums. Early gigs were at school dances and churches around their home in Newport, RI. Eventually, as their harmonic sound was perfected, they got a regular gig on Bannisters Wharf in Newport where they would sing Beatle songs hour after hour.

Classic Tracks: Gary Wright’s “Dream Weaver”

Through lines such as “I’m hairy noon and nighty-night night, My hair is a fright,” and “Grow it, show it, Long as I can grow it, My hair,” the song celebrates the rejection of societal norms and expectations. It encourages embracing one’s natural self and breaking free from the constraints imposed by society. Bill and Bob mostly played acoustic guitars on the rhythm track, miked with Sony C-37P condensers. For electric parts, Bob played a 1965 Gretsch Tennessean—which he still owns and plays onstage—through a Fender Twin Reverb and miked with a Neumann U87, as well as drawing a direct signal using the alligator clip method.

Their performances generated positive reviews from critics and fans alike, including a very well received performance on The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers. The song’s playful list of adjectives that describe different hair types and styles, such as “long, straight, curly, fuzzy” and “oily, greasy, fleecy,” showcases the diversity and individuality of human hair. It celebrates the idea that there is no right or wrong way to wear one’s hair, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and embracing our unique characteristics. “Hair” is a song that resonated deeply with the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

How to Get Rid of a Cowlick: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Hair cowlicks are caused by genetics and are typically located at the crown of the head called a cowlick crown. They can also appear near the front of the hairline, in the middle of the forehead, called a cowlick hairline. Both can make styling bangs a bit more tricky, but not impossible — you just need to know how to hide it (more on that, below). You may be wondering why that funny little piece of hair is called a cowlick. The name cowlick comes from the swirled effect left in the hair of baby cattle after being licked by their mothers. In humans, a cowlick is a small section of hair that grows at a different angle than the rest of the hair on your head.

To get a pesky cowlick to disappear, you'll want to break the cowlick's growth pattern. To do so, blow-dry your cowlick back and forth from right to left over and over again. "Try a center part and allow the cowlick to separate your bangs for a carefree and easy fringe style," says Gillen. He recommends using SACHAJUAN’s Hair Cleansing Cream ($50) as an amazing alternative to shampoo and conditioner.

The Cowsills' musical interest started while their father, William "Bud" Cowsill, was stationed in Canton, Ohio, in the late 1950s, as a US Navy recruiter. As the boys' musical and vocal abilities developed they began performing at church school dances in Stark County, Ohio. These, and other performances, led to the boys' first television appearance on the Gene Carroll Show on WEWS in Cleveland.

In conclusion, “Hair” by The Cowsills is a song that celebrates individuality, self-expression, and the rejection of societal norms. Its powerful and timeless message continues to resonate with listeners, reminding us of the importance of staying true to ourselves in a world that often tries to mold us into something different. “Hair” by The Cowsills ultimately carries a powerful message about self-expression and the importance of staying true to oneself. It encourages listeners to break free from societal expectations and embrace their individuality, whether through their physical appearance or their beliefs and values. The lyrics of “Hair” also use hair as a metaphor for various aspects of life. The protagonist describes their hair as a home for fleas, a hive for bees, and a nest for birds.

Wispy Bangs

Cowlicks are sometimes mistakenly called calics, but they both refer to a piece of hair that grows at a different angle than the rest of your hair. Spelling-wise, the term is cowlick, but they both sound similar if you’re speaking about the subject. “A cowlick differs from balding because a cowlick is a natural hair growth pattern, whereas balding is loss of hair,” Becker explains. This is a section of hair that grows in a different direction than the rest of your hair.

The Cowsills are an American singing group from Newport, Rhode Island, six siblings noted for performing professionally and singing harmonies at an early age, later with their mother. As I listen to “Hair” today, it serves as a reminder of the transformative power of music and its ability to touch our souls. It reminds me to celebrate my own individuality, to embrace the natural beauty within me, and to always stay true to myself, no matter the expectations of society. The song has stood the test of time, remaining an enduring anthem for those who seek to express themselves authentically.

After their initial success, the brothers were joined by their siblings Susan and Paul along with their mother, Barbara. A seventh sibling, Bob's fraternal twin brother Richard, was never part of the band during its heyday, although he occasionally appeared with them in later years. The band taped the TV special in San Francisco on January 5, 1969. As the March 18 broadcast of the TV special approached, though, MGM finally had a change of heart and put the single out. Bill and Bob, meanwhile, were preparing a live album mix over at United Recording with engineer Ben Jordan, who created a stereo mix from the 16-track tape, courtesy of an additional tape machine rented from Wally Heider, who had requested one made by Hidley for his own use. “We knew it was for television, so each of us had to be seen on camera singing a line,” Bob explains.

The process would begin with Bob and Bill explaining the parts for each Cowsill. The family would position themselves in a circle around a tube Neumann U47, which Balestier placed in the center of the room, with Susan up on a stool to allow her to be at the same height as the rest. The younger boys would often pair on one vocal part, with Susan high in the stack, singing the high harmony. Hidley also had to convince 3M to make 2-inch tape stock—Scotch 206, in this case. The Studio 2 console was built by Hidley and Paul Ford, with 16 inputs and Gotham sliding faders (it had rotary faders for the buses). The TTG echo chamber was located on the first floor, across from Hidley’s shop, and was connected to a TEAC tape machine in the adjacent room for any desired tape delay (such as Balestier used on the tail end of “Hair”).

Then, in the late 1970’s, some of the Cowsills regrouped and recorded an album affectionately known as Cocaine Drain. This album was produced by Chuck Plotkin and also featured Dennis Castanares as a “member” of The Cowsills at that time. During those days, The Cowsills sometimes played the LA area as The Secrets and The Critics.

Bridey Murphy, aka Paul, Bill, Barry and Waddy Wachtel, was formed in the mid-70’s. Bill and Barry drifted in and out of this group and one single, The Time Has Come / Be Your Mother’s Son, was recorded with Paul doing all vocals and Waddy playing all instruments. Cowsills BVs were also always doubled, with those parts changed up, as well, to create a fuller track.

Just like changing your part, don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles like braids, buns and ponytails to see what works best for you. It’s also worth mentioning that cowlicks are usually most noticeable on straight hair, so to distract from the cowlick and make it less obvious, try sporting wavy or curly hairstyles, like bathrobe curls or a curly perm. If you have a cowlick hairline that affects your bangs or layers, use a brush to blow-dry your hair towards the left and towards the right to remove the cowlick.

It captured the spirit of rebellion and the desire for individuality that was prominent during that time. The lyrics explore the protagonist’s pride in their long, untamed hair, which becomes a symbol of freedom, self-expression, and non-conformity. The album was completed on March 14, and The Cowsills in Concert was released, with the stereo mix of “Hair,” on May 3, becoming the band’s best-selling album. The hallmark of all Cowsills records is, of course, the vocals, in particular the background vocal stack.

15 Cowlick-Hiding Hairstyles For Easy, Breezy Styling

Yates says that this can’t eliminate the cowlick completely since the follicles are positioned in a way that can’t be moved. A cowlick will look like your hair is parting in a specific direction, while balding could mean that the hair is sparse from thinning or gone from the scalp entirely. Additional places where cowlicks might appear include the nape of the neck and along the sides of the head, near the temples. If you’ve ever dealt with a stubborn section of hair that sticks out above the rest, it’s probably a cowlick. For days when we don't have time to conceal any unruly locks, Dimachki says the best thing to do is place it in a slicked-back bun or textured braid, and no one will be the wiser.

What is the musical Hair about?

As the mother on the TV show inspired by the Cowsills, Shirley made a point of calling them "the real thing". Though she did not sing with them that night, immediately after her announcement the Cowsills played "I Really Want to Know You"; it is the one song recorded by both The Cowsills and The Partridge Family. Shortly afterward, The Cowsills stopped playing together as a band amid a series of interpersonal squabbles. The individual members went on to various career attempts in and out of the music industry, but they did appear at Madison Jr. High School in Tampa, Florida as "The Cowsills" for one performance during the mid-1970s.

Appearances in media

In September 1968, after their summer tour, the Cowsill family relocated to the West Coast, into a house in Santa Monica. Not long after their arrival, a package came in the mail from none other than TV comedy legend Carl Reiner. This one may seem obvious, but when you have a stubborn cowlick, you’ll want to use hair styling products that have an extra strong hold.

Classic Tracks: Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say”

John was also part of the backing band for The Beach Boys’ 50th Anniversary Reunion tour during 2012 and performed on the reunion album recorded in 2011 and 2012. In earlier years, he performed with artists such as Jan & Dean and Dwight Twilley. The band was formed in early 1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill; their brother John joined shortly thereafter. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and Barry played the drums. When John learned to play drums and joined the band, Barry began playing bass.

Keep scrolling to see the expert-approved hairstyles that will magically conceal a cowlick. Flash forward to the 1990s when some of The Cowsills (Bob, Paul, John and Susan) again regrouped. This time they were going to hit the oldies circuit but somehow playing just oldies didn’t appeal to them. They had too much fun on some new material written by Bob and his wife, Mary Jo.

So, this incarnation of The Cowsills started playing small clubs and showcases in the Los Angeles area and across the country. The Cowsills also went back into the studio and Global was a result of those sessions. This incarnation of the band started playing small clubs and showcases in the Los Angeles area and eventually spread out to similar venues across the country and into Canada.

Although contracted for ten appearances, their second and final appearance was on December 24, 1967, after Bud confronted the Sullivan production team over a technical glitch during the performance.

Balestier would mike the drum kit with a pair of Sony C37As as overheads, a Shure Unidyne 545 SD on the snare, and another 545 inside the kick drum, wrapped in a blanket. Lee Mendelson Productions, which was producing Reiner’s special, were clients of a Hollywood recording facility, TTG Studios. McCadden Place, near Highland and Sunset, was built by engineers Ami Hadami and Tom Hidley, both A&R alums, in June 1965. This line is a reference to the fact that Jesus is often depicted in paintings and other artwork as having long hair. The line is suggesting that the speaker’s long hair is a symbol of his rejection of mainstream society’s expectations. Ahead, three styling tips you can also use to temporarily hide a cowlick.

Classic Tracks: David Bowie’s “Five Years,” “Soul Love” & “Moonage Daydream”

Some even have more than one, but it’s not obvious since the weight of the hair pulls it down. Pair them with a long fringe to add some weight on the cowlick to help control them. "Long layers and a longer, face-framing fringe will help with any cowlick," Gillen says. "To get bounce and volume you’ll want to use a little more product with longer hair," he adds. He recommends using SACHAJUAN’s Hair Mousse ($35), which is extremely weightless yet truly delivers bounce and body. If your fringe won’t cooperate, Gillen recommends growing it out into a side swoop with shoulder-length locks.

Then the process was repeated on a second pass, giving four vocal tracks for backgrounds. After Bill and Bob self-produced their next album, We Can Fly, which now included another older brother, Paul, and young sister, Susan (mixed by Roy Cicala at A&R Studios in New York), the group recorded a single, “Indian Lake,” with Wes Farrell at the helm. The Cowsills were known for their distinctive vocal harmonies and catchy pop songs. They were one of the first “bubblegum pop” bands and paved the way for later acts like The Partridge Family. Their music continues to be popular today and their influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary pop artists.

Both Barry and Susan had their lives turned upside down by Hurricane Katrina, which hit the gulf coast in August 2005, since both were residents of the New Orleans area at the time. Susan and her family lost their home and most of their belongings but they were all safe during the hurricane and it’s aftermath and returned to live in New Orleans in January 2006. Barry, unfortunately, did not get out of New Orleans before Katrina hit and was among the missing of Hurricane Katrina for 4 months. Then, sadly, on January 4th, 2006, The Cowsill family got the news that Barry’s body had been found and identified. At the memorial service for Barry, the Cowsill family was informed that Billy had passed away following his battles with hip replacement surgery, back surgery, emphysema, osteoporosis and other problems.

Early recordings were released by the four brothers on Joda and Mercury Records. Barbara (“mini-mom”) joined the group to record The Rain, The Park and Other Things and shortly thereafter 7 year old Susan and brother, Paul, were added to the group. They were signed by MGM records and the group began it’s climb to the top!

These Are the Underrated Paint Colors That Designers Are Obsessing Over

Not only will it feel more cohesive, but if you've got a lot of bright colors in your collection, they'll stand out even more. Whether you have a few tiny frames—like in this bedroom designed by Jae Joo—or medium-size ones on a gallery wall, you can easily swap them out with fresh finds. Tear out pages from a coffee table book or stop by a flea market for new works. If you keep a vase of flowers in your kitchen or living room, spread the love throughout the house.

How to Incorporate Bright Colors in the Bedroom

We're especially into Roman shades in a fun pattern. "It goes against decorating 101, but using small patterns together can be easier on the eye," says interior decorator Kristin Panitch, who designed this dreamy pink cloud of a bedroom. Not only will it look good, but it'll make the room feel bigger and brighter. Quick and easy home decor ideas don't have to look inexpensive when you're on a budget. From Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chairs to Charles and Ray Eames’s designs for Herman Miller, countless modernist furnishings have cropped up in the pages of AD through the years. Here, we take you inside a Beverly Hills mansion, a New York City duplex, a Paris apartment, and other homes that display the height of modernist design. In this texture-rich environment, interior designer Leanne Ford turned an empty fireplace into a little gallery to display pottery and artwork. If your home doesn't have any leftover real estate to convert into a reading nook, design your formal living room to serve double duty as a cozy lounge area. Here, Heidi Caillier strategically chose furniture in fabric and shapes that are sophisticated and homey, perfect for entertaining or unwinding alone.

Here, in a living room designed by Barrie Benson, the four stacks could easily be given a new layout and order using only the books on the table. Layer rugs to keep the texture and coziness going as Apartment Therapy founder Maxwell Ryan did in the bedroom of his Hamptons home. A linen canopy also adds depth and warmth to the neutral color scheme. Here's proof you can make an entire space can feel brand new, on-the-pulse yet timeless, and elevated. You don't have to hire an expert to tackle these ideas. You're one swap away from living like the design pros—and the final results will look like they took way longer to pull off.

Every detail matters when you're giving your home an upgrade. We tapped interior designers for quick and easy inspiration to refresh every corner of your space. All of these low-lift, inexpensive ideas can be done in a day. We sourced spaces for every design style and size home, so you'll be able to make an awkward corner into a cozy reading nook or breathe life into a guest room with eye-catching bedding. If you have crisp white walls and neutral staples, like a sofa and coffee table, choose one statement item that brings in a punch of colorful energy. It can be anything from a vibrant piece of art on the walls to a bright carpet like the one in this living room designed by Leanne Ford Interiors.

"The room doesn't get a lot of light, so I decided to make it cozy and turned it into an English-style portrait room, which is ridiculous but fun," says celebrity chef Alex Hitz. What's cozier than a colorful floor-to-ceiling bookshelf surrounded by seating you can lounge on? Offsetting your books with artwork creates contrast and adds more personality. From the inky stained wood to the modern side chair and clean-lined ladder, this home library designed by Fiona Lynch is a gorgeous contemporary take on traditional design. You could fill it with books—or you could add in decor accents and accessories like vases and sculptures to break up the monotony of a wall of books.

Hadley Mendelsohn is the co-host and executive producer of the podcast Dark House. When she's not busy writing about interiors, you can find her scouring vintage stores, reading, researching ghost stories, or stumbling about because she probably lost her glasses again. Her work has also been published in MyDomaine, Who What Wear, Man Repeller, Matches Fashion, Byrdie, and more. The soft black paint color in this bedroom makes it feel special and intimate in ways you'd never be able to achieve with a lighter hue (this specific shade is Farrow & Ball Railings). The eclectic furniture lends itself nicely to the darkness too, adding a more lived-in vibe.

Throw pillows are the easiest way to freshen up in the bedroom or living room. Introducing a new color, print, or shape with a throw pillow can make the whole space feel new again. Right this way for design ideas from top designers for every room of the house. If any area in your home is feeling austere, sheepskin throws are the easiest solution. They bring in warmth, texture, and comfort while also being super affordable and easy to move throughout your space as your needs and moods shift. Adding the right window treatment can make all the difference.

It's the perfect excuse to invest in a new vase for your bedroom or bathroom. In this New York apartment designed by Katie Ridder, a globe-shaped vase adds a nice bubble detail. If the upkeep is too much, go for a low-maintenance plant instead. In the 1940s and ’50s, midcentury-modern design, with its clean lines, warm woods, and bold upholstery hues (often in woolly, menswear-inspired textures), changed the way homes looked. Suddenly, less was more, and decorating a home was about finding a design where form served function—a philosophy that continues to inspire designers to this day.

Because fitted hats don't have an adjustable strap, there is no opening in the back, which can be a downside to someone with a ponytail or a lot of hair. However, some may prefer the sleeker, less bulky look of the back of the hat and the comfort of the band on your head. You either buy a fitted hat according to your head measurements or try a FlexFit hat that has elastic in the back and usually comes in a standard size range (small, medium, large, etc). He said most visitors are highly interested in learning about local culture and history. Customs and Border Protection facility was “instrumental” in attracting cruise ship companies Viking Cruises and American Queen Voyages to add Duluth to their networks.

The sailing schedules of the ships are dictated not only by the weather but also by the economy and demand for the goods they carry. The importance of a permanent customs facility in Duluth cannot be overstated, as it was a primary barrier to cruising in the Great Lakes where passengers may cross borders multiple times, said David Naftzger, executive director of the Great Lakes/St. This unexpected development comes after an agreement with Cruise the Great Lakes, a travel company that has scheduled nine different cruises to dock in Duluth for the day. The Octantis will debut in 2022, notably visiting Duluth as part of an eight-day itinerary exploring Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Other ports of call include Thunder Bay, Canada; the Apostle Islands; Houghton, Michigan; Mackinac Island and Milwaukee. Visit Duluth celebrated a milestone for a Great Lakes cruise line Friday, when it issued a first look at one of the under-construction vessels already ticketed to dock in Duluth.

Marie, Mackinac Island and Marquette, Michigan; Thunder Bay, Ontario; and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Hartman said ships will be in Duluth on Mondays, which will help balance from weekend tourism influxes and will support local businesses during the week. The ships will be docked for the day, then will travel on toward Bayfield overnight. During the Cruise the Great Lakes annual meeting, which is being held at the DECC this week, organization and Duluth officials highlighted the work that’s been done to allow for cruise ships to come to Duluth. This is the first of seven Viking cruises that will be stopping in Duluth through September. Four of these stops will be part of a new option for passengers that can either start or end their cruise here in Duluth.

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority and the Duluth Economic Development Authority approved $40,000 late last year toward designing the terminal facility, which would welcome waterborne international travelers. In late 2020, the city of Duluth received preliminary notice it was in line to receive a $2.6 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to build a terminal facility — possibly to be located behind the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

In the Port of Duluth-Superior, last year marked the lowest year for grain exports since 1890, falling to roughly 644,000 tons. Port officials say it’s difficult to project whether those exports may rebound. DeLuca noted a strong dollar is making it more expensive to move wheat out of Midwest markets compared to international sources.

There are 2 distinct types of ships that visit the port on a regular basis. 90% of the vessel traffic is comprised of “Lakers;” bulk carriers specially built to sail the Great Lakes. Lakers are over 1,000 feet long, with a carrying capacity of nearly 70,000 short tons. These ships are predominantly black or “hull red” (the natural color of iron ore) in color. The majority of Lakers are now self-unloaders with a long boom mounted above their decks. These ships remain on the Great Lakes because they are too large to fit through the St. Lawrence Sea Way.

Port Duluth is approx 2300 mi (3700 km) to the west from the Atlantic Ocean, making it the world's farthest inland port accessible to oceangoing (cargo and cruise) ships. Annually, Port Duluth handles average 35 million cargo tonnes and ~900 ship calls. Port Duluth MN cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month.

Carter said the final parts of rail construction and inspection are ongoing right now. She said they anticipate the facility will increase tonnage moving through the port by about 400,000 metric tons. The port handled about 2.3 million metric tons last year, which was down about 5 percent from its five-year average. “That’s a big win from a supply-chain perspective for the region,” said Deb DeLuca, the port authority’s executive director. Expect to see the Viking Octantis, Viking Polaris, Ocean Navigator and the Hanseatic Inspiration. Throughout the summer, between 7-9 ships from Viking, American Queen Voyages and Pearl Seas cruise lines are expected to visit Duluth. Passengers will  spend the day exploring the area with various tour options, such as Glensheen Mansion or the North Shore Scenic Railroad. The ships will leave in the evening for the next Lake Superior locations. Cruising vessels in the Great Lakes are smaller than ocean-going vessels and typically have 200 people; the larger ship Octantis brings just under 400. This smaller size allows for greater health and safety measures and a more intimate experience, said Naftzger.

At the western end of Lake Superior, Duluth welcomes some of the largest ships on the Great Lakes into its busy harbor. With its lakeside setting, which the local Ojibwe people call Gichigami ("great sea"), the greatest of the Great Lakes feels like a port town and takes advantage of its prime position with a coastline that is 49 miles long. Overall, the port shipped more than 30 million tons of cargo last year, which was down about 2.3 percent from the five-season average. That includes around 19 million tons of iron ore cargo, making up more than half of all tonnage.
